Macef January shows positive signs of recovery

Signs of improvement in the market were evident in the January edition of Macef, which was held from 15 to 18 January at New Fiera Milano Exhibition Centre. Organiser Fiera Milano International revealed that more than 90,000 visitors participated in the fair, a rise of 12% over last year. The number of Italian buyers increased, while that of overseas buyers stayed the same. What's more, there were about 500 exhibitors from the jewellery sector this year.

Enrico Pazzali, managing director of the organiser, commented, "Following the positive signs of a recovery in consumer spending evidenced by Christmas purchases, the distribution industry seems to have gained confidence and now feels the need to begin investing again. So, a significant recovery for the show is looking possible." Over 2,000 foreign buyers attended, 30% of whom were visiting Macef for the first time. There were even some from the big international chains such as Harrod's and Lafayette. Both exhibitors and buyers from the jewellery sector were satisfied with the results, said the organiser.

Clubbi, the Italian Association of Manufacturers for the promotion of fashion jewellery and accessories, has predicted four trend themes for Spring/Summer 2010 for Macef: Sophisticated Gipsy Style – large and showy pieces with carved stones, oxidized-effect metal ornaments, enamelled resin etc being the main staples; Sumptuous – "extra-sized" semi-precious stones, crystals and pearls are the seasonal must-haves; Italian 60s Atmosphere – classic metals are lit with sorbet shades to give shape to tasty bonbon-effect necklaces; and Between Future Dreams and Reality – dizzying shades of colour, dynamic contrasts and geometric shapes are key. Generally, the organiser predicted clearly defined shapes and colours, while materials such as minerals, glass, amber, coral and silver are very popular for the season.

The September 2010 edition of Macef will take place from 3 to 6 September at New Fiera Milano Exhibition Centre, Milan.
